MALMÖ 2024 ■ From Joost With Love

Sometimes it’s pretty difficult to not analyse your own country’s Eurovision entry. And frankly, perhaps I am analysing too much. Just read back my early prediction of ‘Burning Daylight’ from last year. Only a few days after the release of Duncan’s now infamous composition, I thought I had a pretty clear idea of what was possible, result-wise, outside the fan bubble. Continuation of the status quo would have been my desired road to success. Now I know that geopolitical sentiment in the contest, rule changes and the ever-growing power of social media influencers, showbiz media and traders (betters) can have an influence too. ■ Door: Gert Waterink ■

Having said that, ‘Burning Daylight’ saw the daylight at the wrong moment in time. If the song happened five years earlier, things could’ve been different. But now we have ‘Europapa’, and Joost Klein probably is the antidote to that conservative thinking that took the better of the post-victory years for The Netherlands (Duncan’s 2019 victory). And by jolly has it been an antidote. For me it has been an emotionally bewildering experience upon its release last Thursday. ‘Europapa’ must be the most competitive radically fun Dutch entry since…..since…..we  were “inhaling all that beauty every day” in 1974 and went “walking along with our dingdongs” in 1975. We had Mouth back then, but Joost is today’s Mouth.

MALMÖ 2024 ■ Vertrouwen op succes is er nog niet echt

De keuze was reuze! Het vernieuwde selectiecomité had 600 liedjes tot z’n beschikking. De nieuwgekozen delegatie-leider Twan van de Nieuwenhuizen sprak zich uit voor een sterk verbeterde opzet van onze interne preselectie. Inmiddels ook wel bekend als het Nationaal Intern Festival. Want na het media-debacle van seizoen ’22/’23 omtrent Mia & Dion, andermaal ingegeven door de rechtse showbizz- en riooljournalistiek in de lage landen, moest en zou editie ’23/’24 weer resulteren in stevig succes. ■ Door: Gert Waterink ■

Vergeet immers niet dat dit decennium, de jaren ’20, nog niet echt vlotjes loopt qua successen. Bij deze vernieuwing werd er dus flink meer focus gelegd op uitstraling, vocale uitmuntendheid en een strakkere mediatraining.

MALMÖ 2024 ■ Nieuw songfestivalsucces kan, óók met een festival dat verslechtert

2023 is een songfestivaljaar om snel te vergeten. In de eerste plaats natuurlijk vanwege het resultaat. Met een twee-na-laatste plaats in de halve finale en een 32^e plaats totaal was dit het slechtste resultaat sinds Trijntje’s scheurjurk. Maar toch vond ik dit eigenlijk nog een moeilijker te verdragen songfestivaljaar dan 2011, 2012 en 2015. ■ Door: Gert Waterink ■

De Coronapandemie heeft op onnavolgbare wijze bloot gelegd dat het songfestival vooral een entertainment blockbuster is van jewelste waar de macht van het grote geld in exponentieel tempo groeit. De afwezigheid van voormalige festivalgrootheden als Rusland en Turkije zal daar ook mee te maken hebben. Nieuwe geldbronnen dienen aangeboord te worden, ook omdat het traditionele kijken via de TV steeds meer afneemt (de EBU verdoezelt dit een beetje). De TikTok-generatie wordt machtiger. Corona heeft dus veranderingen teweeg gebracht sinds 2020 die opmerkelijker lijken te zijn dan de gehele jaren ’10 op het songfestival. En helaas heeft daarbij ook het live wedstrijdelement aan kracht moeten inboeten. Ziet AVROTROS dat ook? En hoe richten we eventueel nieuw songfestivalsucces in met het recente nieuws van een licht gewijzigde selectiecommissie en het aanstellen van een nieuwe delegatieleider?

LIVERPOOL 2023 ■ Pre-rehearsal TOP 13 prediction

Today the first day of the rehearsals in Liverpool are underway! An exciting moment for all 37 participating nations. Even more so for The Netherlands, who received a lot of backlash on their recent live performances, especially from the Dutch showbiz press. But also promotion-wise it was a bumpy road, and the fan community has disconnected itself from Mia & Dion. For the real contenders –Sweden, France, Norway and Finland– it’s perhaps even more exciting. Being first in the betting odds brings pressure (I know everything about it: 2019). Rehearsals can make or break both favourites and ‘the forgotten ones’. ■ By: Gert Waterink ■

This year I decided to not extensively follow the rehearsals. There’s no real reason to do it, as the first set of rehearsals are taking place behind closed doors. Some of the Pre-Eurovision Fan Concerts to me (London, Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam) are nice to get some information from in terms of vocals and chemistry. But they do give an inflated idea of what to expect on the real Eurovision stage. Remember: Eurovision is foremost a TV show for 200 millions of Europeans watching àt home.

Having said that, here’s my TOP 13 prediction. But I first kick off with some ‘special mentions’ that I wasn’t able to put in my TOP 13 as of today:

LIVERPOOL 2023 ■ Coldeweijer & Showbizzconsorten zien fouten in; gaan milder te werk inzake Mia & Dion

Nederland is een praatgraag land. Misschien is dat cultuureigen. Immers, al die 17 miljoen coaches aan de zijlijn hebben altijd het beste met mensen voor gehad. En dat op horizontaal niveau mee willen denken én praten heeft al wel degelijk voor de nodige poldersuccessen gezorgd, zowel op grote schaal (politiek) als ook op kleinere schaal (in de huiskamer). Het poldermodel zit wat dat betreft vastgeroest in onze haarvaten. ■ Door: Gert Waterink ■

Kijk de vele talkshows er maar op na. Van WNL Op Zondag tot Op 1, van SBS Shownieuws tot RTL Boulevard, van De Wereld Draait Door tot Jinek, van Goedemorgen Nederland tot Vandaag Inside en van Beau tot Khalid & Sophie: Praten is, wellicht nog meer dan in omringende Westerse landen, een totaal verdienmodel geworden. En vaak is dat best oké. Maar sinds de komst van (anti)social media en de vele vloggers met Euro-tekens in hun ogen, lijkt ook het fenomeen talkshow in Ferrari-snelheid de dag door te scheuren. Tot aan het fenomeen cancelen aan toe. We zagen en hoorden hoe al die miljoenen coaches tijdens het WK Voetbal 2022, in vaak diezelfde talkshows, al rollebollend hun gelijk probeerden te halen. En nu is daar dan het Songfestival!

LIVERPOOL 2023 ■ Netherlands; a disliked yet competitive entry?

When the promo campaign for the newly selected Dutch Eurovision artists Mia & Dion was launched last November, it already got off on the wrong foot. The entertainment media outlets in The Netherlands, who sadly have sunk more and more into the new phenomenon of juice channels, get rather cranky towards Duncan Laurence as of late. Victories over here are easily forgotten, so when emo boy Duncan becomes more influential to a new Dutch pop sound, the Dutch very quickly think he let the fame go to his head. ■ Door: Gert Waterink ■
